2010 Big Read, A Lesson Before Dying

Welcome to Virgin Islands Council on the Arts (VICA) third annual Big Read, a major initiative from the National Endowment for the Arts. Designed to revitalize the role of literary reading in American culture, The Big Read hopes to unite communities through great literature, as well as inspire students to become life-long readers.

The novel chosen for Big Read 2010 is A lesson before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines’s. This novel has a long history of championing social justice. Fiction has the signal ability to embody social ideas in a compelling narrative that possesses both emotional and intellectual power. The story offers a painful yet inspirational tale of institutional injustice and personal redemption. It addresses the biggest theme possible-how one affirms life in the face of death.

A great book combines enlightenment with enchantment. It awakens our imagination and enlarges our humanity. It can even offer harrowing insights that somehow console and comfort us.

The third annual Big Read will start in January of 2010, please stay tuned for a schedule of events.

If you are interested in being listed on the Artist Registry, please download and complete the form to Annette Henry at vicastx@yahoo.com. Should you have any questions, please contact by e-mail or at 340-773-3075.
